About

One glance and you know that dress or bikini is Zimmermann. This iconic Australian label stays true to its original vision: sophisticated femininity, clever colour combinations and delicate original prints.

Sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann founded their namesake label in 1991. They fast won a loyal following - smart, sartorially savvy women with an eye for quality fabrics and clever cutting.

Early in its evolution, Zimmermann took the bold step of fusing fashion with swimwear and presented it to the world. It soon found its footing with the fashion elite. Zimmermann’s bold original prints, beautifully made one-pieces and sculptural bikinis create a new point of reference in flattering, sexy and stylish swimwear. Here was a quintessentially Australian fashion label and as the Sydney Morning Herald so nicely put it, “If Sydney was personified, she’d be bronzed, brazen and…wearing a Zimmermann bikini, so synonymous has the sunny label become with Australian style.”

Zimmermann present their ready-to-wear collections each year in both Australia and the USA, and swim at the Miami Swim Fair (July) in the US. Label extensions have seen the launch of Zimmermann Swim Separates, Kids and Accessories. They maintain showrooms in Sydney, London, New York and Los Angeles. The success of the swimwear resulted in increasing demand from international retailers and press for Zimmermann to make ready-to-wear collections available outside of Australia. In 2007, Zimmermann launched tightly edited collections to the Northern Hemisphere market to great success.

In Australia and abroad, the label receives extensive and enthusiastic editorial coverage and has graced the pages of magazines including: Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, Elle, W, Glamour, Nylon and Marie Claire. It has also been a regular feature in international swimwear bible, Sport Illustrated. The collections are stocked in stores internationally. Stockists include the iconic Barney’s, Saks 5th Avenue, Bloomingdales, Neiman Marcus, Harrods, Harvey Nichols and in-the-know fashion chains such as Intermix. Zimmermann is also featured on the world’s premier online stores such as Net-A-Porter and ShopBop.

In Australia, Zimmermann maintains 15 stand-alone stores across the country, working with the highly acclaimed designer Don McQualter to create seductive and dynamic retail destinations.

Sustainability Efforts

Zimmermann stands for style over fashion, and their collections are designed with integrity, to last. They centre building respectful, mutually beneficial, long-term partnerships with their factories and other suppliers, based on the highest standards of ethics and professionalism. Zimmermann want to protect the environment and actively choose to work with the most energy efficient and water efficient production processes available to them.

Natural fibres account for nearly 90% of Zimmermann collections, the majority being silk, linen, and cotton. They limit the use of synthetics to garments such as swimwear, slips and pleated items that require nylon, elastane or polyester for specific functional reasons.

Zimmermann select fabrics for quality, texture and wearability and are regularly looking for opportunities to use fabrics from sustainable sources; for example, Zimmermann are proud members of The Better Cotton Initiative (BCI), and since early 2021 they have used organic linen for T-shirting, and nylon made from recycled plastic in their swimwear linings.

Zimmermann collections are fur-free and do not use Angora. They do not use banned animal-derived materials, including vulnerable or endangered species included on either the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) or the Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) lists.

In regards to leather Zimmermann only source from tanneries with a proven track record on traceability and standards that meet their criteria, and all suppliers have signed Zimmermann’s Supplier Code of Conduct, which includes provisions on good animal husbandry. The Leather Working Group is an international, not-for-profit membership organisation responsible for the world’s largest leather sustainability program. Zimmermann aim to source only from tanneries that are members of the Leather Working Group (LWG) and continue to actively research new partners and opportunities to contribute to a more responsible leather supply chain from farm to tannery.

Upcycle & on-sell – Zimmermann sell as much of their excess fabric as they can to resellers for use by other designers. Where possible, they also over-dye old season colours to use in new season collections.
