About
Country Road began as a team of four who set up shop in Hawthorn, led by Stephen Bennett. The name was chosen to reflect the brand’s ethos; Country was chosen to signify a strong desire to create product with authenticity, while Road acknowledged the way forward. A simple aesthetic became synonymous with the brand. The label quickly evolved into Australia’s first lifestyle brand; styling first our wardrobes, before reworking our homes. From start to finish; inspiration to final product; every product is considered, well-constructed and hard-wearing, yet effortless in approach.
Sustainability Efforts
Country Road chooses to support local farmers first, chooses natural fibres where they can and champions innovation in the environmental space. Their commitment to quality is driven by a strictly adhered to Environmental Code of Conduct and Animal Welfare Policy. Some of the organisations they work with include The Better Cotton Initiative, Oritain, Canopy and Landcare Australia.
Country Road considers every step in their supply chain and endorses the Global Living Wage Coalition and Anker Methodology definition of a living wage. Country Road is also a proud signatory of the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh and has received an A- rating in the 2019 Baptist World Aid Ethical Fashion Report. They partnered with Leather Working Group in 2017, working with suppliers to map the leather supply chain and source leather from tanneries undertaking better environmental practices.
Country Road have made the commitment to all take-home packaging and labelling to be 100% recyclable or reusable by 2022. Their swimwear uses recycled nylon and Marine Debris Bakelite- a material made from 100% recycled plastic that has been collected from Australian beaches- is used in Country Road jewellery and store fixtures.
Country Road also plays a part in protecting and empowering local communities. They partnered with Australian charity Redkite every year since 2008. Redkite provides essential support for children and young people diagnosed with cancer, and their families. Each year, the Country Road Head Office produces, packs and donates Redkite Red Bags to patients and families. These tote bags include practical items like toiletries, reusable coffee cups, vital information about support services and a teddy bear to cuddle. Since the partnership began, Country Road has donated over 6,000 Red Bags, and raised over $1.3 million for Redkite through customer, employee and corporate fundraising.
